Alternatives to Drunk Driving Part 2

DUI arrests occur when you least expect it. One minute, you’re at your favorite bar celebrating with friends, and the next you’re in the back of a police car with your hands shackled behind your back and brilliant blue and red lights flashing in your face. What’s even scarier is what can occur when you get behind the wheel. DUI is a serious crime, but if your negligence leads to a fatality, you could find yourself contacting a manslaughter defense attorney in Tampa.

In part one, we discussed two effective alternatives to drunk driving, getting a ride from a friend and calling a taxi. Now, we will explore modern innovations that are making it easier for Americans to avoid getting a DUI.

Ridesharing Apps

Ridesharing apps like Lyft and Uber have made avoiding DUIs so simple that it’s hard to fathom someone opting to drive drunk over using one. Not only are these applications typically cheaper than taxis, but they also require very little effort to summon a car and their integrated GPS technology ensures that your driver shows up promptly to your exact location. Ridesharing apps save your credit card information so you can summon a car without having to fumble around your wallet, and they offer an array of exclusive services to help minimize costs. If you haven’t already, take this time to download Uber and Lyft and create profiles. Next time you’re leaving the bar and you feel inebriated, give one of these services a try. Your first ride is usually free.

Evaluate Yourself

Apps like BreathalEyes and Drink Tracker are effective tools for helping you determine whether or not you are fit to drive. BreathalEyes scans your eyes for Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), a type of involuntary eye movement commonly associated with those under the influence of alcohol. The app claims to be accurate within .02 -.20 percent.

DrinkTracker, on the other hand, is an app designed to test your blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Whenever you consume a drink, you must input the drink into the app. The app will then determine your BAC by combining this information with your age, gender, weight, and height to determine whether or not you are drunk. You can even set a BAC limit to help you get a better idea of when your BAC will return to the legal limit. Other features include a map for helping you get home and contact integration for phoning a friend. Unfortunately, you’ll have to be very diligent while using this app if you want it to work for you, but spending a few seconds inputting drinks is preferable to contacting a manslaughter defense lawyer in Tampa after taking someone’s life accidentally during a drunken stupor.
